For the average consumer, their experience with Interactive Television (iTV) is dependent on the device on which they are watching their content, whether it is a PC or television with a built in cable card or set-top box. Therefore, the consumer electronics industry is a central player in the development and implementation of iTV. At some point in the future, the development of OCAP has the expectation that the equipment manufactured and sold by consumer electronics companies will be compatible with the features available on iTV no matter what the delivery system – cable, satellite, broadband or over the air.

Vidiom Systems offers consumer electronics companies two choices when it comes to OCAP software stacks – Vidiom and Osmosys. These stacks drive the devices (set-top boxes (STB) or TVs) that are to be used by the cable industry and may need certification from Cable Labs. This certification process performed in service certification waves each year performs over 14,000 tests on the individual device. Moreover, as either the standards or the device changes, re-certification may be necessary. The process of preparing consumer electronics products for market and making sure that they are compatible with all of the delivery systems is a long and tedious process. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is also working on another standard (DCR+) to provide a consistent platform for consumer electronics devices.
