Java Technology Kit (JVM)

As cable operator’s transition to OCAP™ enabled networks, manufacturers need to build new OCAP digital cable receivers for use on these networks. Having an OCAP implementation isn’t enough. One of the key pieces of software in any OCAP receiver is the Java Virtual Machine, the engine that runs the OCAP APIs and the interactive services being delivered to the receiver. Let Vidiom’s television technology experts provide the foundation to power your next OCAP set-top box or television.

Introducing the Java Technology Kit
The Vidiom Java Technology Kit (JTK) provides the core Java technology components necessary for building an OCAP 1.0-compliant digital receiver. The Java Technology Kit includes the following:

  • Esmertec Jbed™ Java Virtual Machine
  • Java2 Micro Edition (J2ME) Connected
  • Device Configuration 1.0
  • Personal Basis Profile
  • Java TV 1.0 APIs
  • Java Media Framework (JMF) 1.0 APIs

Vidiom Systems has been selected by Esmertec AG as the licensing and distribution entity for the television receiver market. Vidiom is an Esmertec source code licensee established as a professional services provider for Esmertec products, including virtual machine porting and support.

The Jbed™ Runtime Engine
Esmertec’s Jbed is a leading Java runtime embedded platform for multimedia devices. Esmertec’s J2ME CDC implementation sets new standards for performance and memory efficiency through several unique patent-pending technology innovations. The core Jbed platform uses the unique, patent-pending FastDAC (Fast Dynamic Adaptive Compiler) to deliver superior runtime performance in a very small memory footprint.

J2ME Personal Basis Profile
J2ME Personal Basis Profile is a set of Java APIs that support resource-constrained devices with a standards-based GUI framework. Combined with the Connected Device Configuration (CDC), J2ME Personal Basis Profile provides a complete J2ME application environment for OCAP devices.

Java TV™
Java TV is an extension of the Java platform and is designed to provide access to functionality unique to digital television receivers. The OCAP 1.0 specification requires the use of Java TV, and provides APIs for:

  • Audio/video streaming
  • Conditional access
  • Access to in-band and out-of-band data
  • Channels
  • Access to service information
  • Tuner control for channel changing
  • On-screen graphics control

JMF
The Java Media Framework (JMF) APIs are an integral part of the OCAP specification and provide a platform-neutral framework for displaying time-based media. Using JMF, you can synchronize and present time-based media from diverse sources.
